KMS Students Launch Community Garden Project

On April 29th, over 75 volunteers consisting of students, parents, administrators, teachers and community members worked on building ten raised beds for a community garden by Kennedy Middle School. The building of the garden beds was the culmination of months of planning and research by the KMS EcoClub.

KMS students created the plans for the placement of the garden beds and decided which vegetables will be placed in the beds according to test results received from Michigan State University. The beds are twenty feet by five feet and will eventually be wheelchair accessible.

Students are working with Matt Thompson from the Community Garden Initiative to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to harvest for a Fall Festival. The Fall Festival will be held at KMS and the money raised will go towards feeding the homeless in neighboring communities.

Students received donations for bricks, soil, plants and seeds.  They are still looking for donations of rakes, lawn bags, shovels, and gloves.  Cash donations can also be made out to EcoClub and dropped off at the KMS office. Additional information on volunteering to help water and tend to the garden...contact KMS Teachers Ms. Tamer at 586-285-8833 or Ms. Malloy at 586-285-8838
